Rich Coogan - Keyboards and Vocals

"Okay - You can get back in the band only if you promise to program EVERY SONG if you decide to leave again - but it'll be healthier for you if you stay..."

- Phil threatening Rich about re-joining Steppin' Out

The first time I saw Rich play was on stage back in the 80's when synthesizers dominated the airwaves.  I still can't figure out exactly how one guy can cover so many parts with 2 keyboards and ... how many hands?  If you've seen Steppin' Out, you already know they have an absolute lock on the best guitar duo possible.  I'll hold them up to anybody on any pro level you care to go to.  Having said that, Rich on keyboards is the real secret that Steppin' Out is hiding - I mean have you heard him play Frankenstein???  Fuhgeddabowdit.
.
So where DID he get all those hands from?  Rich is a piano player first and while he grew up listening to the usual suspects like Elton John (his personal favorite) and Billy Joel, you might be surprised to learn that he's also a big fan of Mozart, Beethoven, even Ragtime's Scott Joplin.

"It's kind of like a symphony," he says, when talking about his favorite songs to play.  Songs like "Funeral For A Friend" or "Bohemian Rhapsody".  "I love all the musical sections, progressions, and keyboard parts."

For me, I like it just fine when he's blinding me with science.  He's an 80's synth wizard.

Rich has been in a lot bands - Under Cover, Toy Soldiers, Horizon, Jimmy Mack, Mirinda James, Imagining Lennon, and more.  Does that mean he moves around a lot?  Yeah, it does.  So much so that Phil made him promise that if he leaves, he's got to program every song into a sequencer.  (For the uninitiated, a sequencer is like a keyboard auto pilot.)  Steppin' Out's not worried though because, for Rich, the band has truly become family.
He's not alone in that.
